How to Minimize Your Double Chin

Are you embarrassed by that unsightly roll under your chin? If so, you’re not alone, because millions of men and women share this problem. It’s partly a matter of genetics and partly due to aging, but luckily there are ways you can fight back without resorting to surgery.

First of all, losing weight will shrink a double chin. If you have a copy of my book, Dr. Kellyann’s Bone Broth Diet, check out the before-and-after pictures—for instance, the photos of Nadine on page 25, Dolores on page 47, and Joanne on page 239—and you’ll see the huge difference that three weeks on my diet made.

In addition, good posture will minimize your double chin. Sitting and standing up straight will give you a better neckline, and at the same time it’ll strengthen the muscles in your neck and jaw.

Daily exercises will also help you strengthen these muscles and slim your chin. Here are seven good ones:

  • The Jaw Lift-and-Lower. Open your mouth very wide. Now pull your bottom lip in tight over your bottom teeth. Slowly move your lower jaw up and down.

  • The Kisser. Sit up straight. Tilt your head back gently until you’re looking at the ceiling. Now pucker your lips tightly, as if you’re trying to give the ceiling a big kiss.

  • The Platysma Toner. The platysma is a muscle connecting your shoulder to your jaw line. To exercise it, sit with your back straight. Pull your lips back against your teeth, pulling the corners of your mouth down. Open your mouth a little, keeping your lips pressed against your teeth. Make clockwise circles with your lower jaw, and then make counter-clockwise circles.

  • The Tongue Press. Sit with your back straight. Tilt your head up so you’re looking at the ceiling, pressing your tongue against the roof of your mouth at the same time. Now lower your chin to your chest, and press your tongue against the roof of your mouth again.

  • The “O.” Tilt your head so you’re looking at the ceiling. Open your lips a little. Form your lips into an “O” shape, and hold for 20 seconds.

  • The Tongue Twister. This one is easy. Simply open your mouth wide and stick out your tongue, wiggling it from side to side.

  • The Tennis Ball Trick. Hold a tennis ball under your chin, tucking it against your neck. Now try to move your chin to roll the ball a little.

It takes time for these exercises to work, but do them diligently—while perfecting your posture and trimming off as much extra weight as you can—and over time you’ll see a younger, slimmer chin line emerge. Keep it up, and you’ll be able to trade those turtlenecks and cowls for scoop necks and deep-vee tops!
