Project: Giveaway!

I’ve been a busy girl… thinking, writing, fighting with Microsoft Word, tossing stuff around and saying “no” to just about everything which included wearing a strappy pair heels and hiring a babysitter. But the good news is, it’s here!  Living Paleo for Dummies has arrived! I have to say, it’s kinda thrilling to see stuff that’s been in my head for so long finally in print. Cool. Totally cool!

But I wasn’t alone on this thinking, writing  - and wishing Microsoft Word was dead to me –  journey. The fabulous Melissa Joulwan from the wildly popular paleo recipe and lifestyle blog www.theclothesmakethegirl.com, was in on this too. She contributed all of the amazing recipes and the practical portions of the book, while I turned into a nutritional nerd and spearheaded the more science like info. If you don’t know Melissa yet, you should. She is what I call the paleo perfect storm. She a gifted writer so she can blog like a nobody’s business. She’s the recipe goddess, and has a heart of gold. I’m better having met her, and it was an honor sharing this book title.

Melissa Joulwan is the author of the paleo recipe and lifestyle blog www.theclothesmakethegirl.com

I want you to own this book. I want your family to own this book. I want anyone you give a fig about to own this book. Why? Because I have spent more then 1/2 of my life discovering what  food can do to change your life. Yes, just food. I’ve evolved in my practice and in my nutritional consultations to really get this now. I’ve seen it all. The healing juices from the “rarest of trees” and powders from the world’s most “exotic” plants, “ground-breaking” spray vitamins and products you dont even want to know about! But here’s the thing… you’ve gotta put real foods first. Period. That’s your launching pad. I’ve seen such success with changing your life with just food, I now know it’s a moral obligation to make sure you know what I know.

Here’s 20 reasons you should pick up a copy or two. If you have any interest any of these happenings, you’ll feel the book is well worth it’s salt:

  • Losing weight and gaining strength
  • Saying bye bye to bloating
  • Getting better skin that carries a glowy complexion (and did I mention bright eyes?)
  • Regulating your hormones
  • Tapping into your fat burning furnace so you can start to melt away fat – regularly
  • Reducing all of those pesky allergies
  • Squashing all of those totally avoidable irritations from food sensitivities
  • Boosting your immunity so no more sick days
  • Sleeping better…like before the kids came along… kind of sleep
  • Making better poops and healing intestinal issues that set you back
  • Healing conditions that you may have had for like, ever
  • Looking ageless
  • Fewer prescriptions and trips to the doctors office (remember all of the prescriptions are not designed to keep you well! You’re on your own for that)
  • Stabilizing your blood sugar, which is waaaay important in looking and feeling your best
  • Reducing – even annihilating –  that big bully inflammation
  • Improving your bone health (which includes better teeth)
  • Feeling like you are in happy land
  • Feeling like a fitness bad ass with your improved work-outs
  • Boosting your metabolism
  • Feeling a totally different connection with food

If all of that doesn’t wow you – then how’s this? Smokin’ hot fitness! There’s a complete beginners, intermediate and advanced paleo fitness regimen in the book, but what’s really exciting is our fitness model; the fabulous Jen Sinkler, who just happens to be sexy, strong and a world class fitness authority.  What I appreciate the most about Jen is that she’s not only jaw dropping fit, but the chick can write! She’s the former Fitness Editor for Experience Life magazine and is inspiring us even more on her website  Thrive with Jen Sinkler . She’s truly lovely, talented and will motivate you in her Thrive adventures!

Jen Sinkler is the author of the blog Thrive with Jen Sinkler

So you probably want to know about the “giveaway” piece of this. Here you go: I’m giving away 3 signed copies of these bad boys! I just have one question: Tell me what you want out of all of this Paleo stuff. Living Paleo can take you from where you are now, to where you want to be. Tell me, where do you want to be?

The bottom line questionWhat do you want Living Paleo to do for you?

I have found this book easy to read and full of useful information

I Have been struggling to lose weight and immediately saw results following this diet. I love how the author explained the science and the recipes are great.

I’ve tried many of the recipes and the family loves them. My 10 year old gobbles up the teriyaki-turkey meatball soup. My 8 year old loves the Zucchini Lasagna.

Thanks so much for such a concise guide.

My goal for 2013 is to maintain the 17lbs I lost since before Thanksgiving (that’s right, I managed to keep it off during the holidays!) and loose 8lb more. Ultimate goal is to continue a healthy diet and begin training in preparation for next October’s Tough Mudder!!!!! This is a present to myself as I approach 49 in August. Thanks Kelly for your inspiration! xo

As a chronic Lyme Disease sufferer, I’ve spent the last 7 years watching my body betray me. From the digestive tract to the nervous system, from major organs to the joints, every part has joined the uprising. Repeated courses of antibiotics had left me unable to eat just about anything without getting a stomach ache…until I discovered the paleo lifestyle last October. For the first time in years I can have a basic meal without fear.

I’ve only just begun with paleo, but my goal this year is to learn all I can so that, hopefully, I can simply live without discomfort, anxiety, sleeplessness, aches, pain…..

My Paleo goals are to regain optimal health to include great sleep and razor sharp focus and thinking so that I can pull out all of the stops in 2013 and be all that I can be!!! And losing about 20 lbs, so that I look as good on the outside as I know I’ll feel on the inside is also my goal. I feel confident that taking my own personal Paleo challenge, thanks to Dr. KellyAnn, will get me there!

I have been Paleo for about 2 years, but slowly I have let things creep back in. It is a NOTICEABLE difference. My goal for 2013 is to get back to my 80/20 eating and feel better with more energy. Before paleo I could barely walk my joints hurt so bad.(I’m only 45) One week in and I was pain free. You can’t argue with that.
    Cheers to you!

I’ve always been active, but I’ve also always been a bit (and sometimes more than a bit) overweight. My relationship with food is tumultuous. I eat in response to emotions and I eat a lot. I’ve tried many diets; I’ll lose weight and then gain it right back. I am hoping to embrace paleo as a lifestyle. One that compliments my activity level, but more than that – one that heals my relationship with food. Food should be fuel; it should make us healthy, not unhealthy. Living paleo will hopefully help me achieve my best self. Thanks!

my goal for this book is to help me in a few areas: my constant battle with weight and eating disorders, my gastrointestinal issues, my osteoarthritis (I’m only 33) which stems from hereditary hemochromatosis, and an easy way for my hubs to understand the diet/lifestyle a lot better (so maybe it will be easier for him to go along with – he already loves some of the well-fed recipes, so I’m hoping something that’s more than just a cookbook will get him some better knowledge of it).

I have been living with “fibromyalgia” for 16 years (I’m 34). Before this, which was triggered by two car accidents in two days, I was voted most athletic, captain of all of my sports, and extremely active. I am now overweight, in pain, and tired all of the time. I have followed a Paleo blueprint for about a month and feel great! I want more!

As a nurse, I believe in food as medicine not drugs! To many Americans live with one hand in a box and the other with a soda and we wonder why we are so unhealthy and unhappy.

My husband and I are planning on starting a family this year and we believe paleo is the way we’d like to raise them.

I will tackle 2013 with dietary changes and lifestyle changes! I made it through Christmas without falling off the wagon, I can make it this year! One month sugar free!

I no longer had the ‘lizard skin’ about which I’d been teased in my youth; I no longer looked like I’d been burned on my extremities. In addition, I had tons of energy and desire to work out. For the first time in my life, things related to my body were in sync. I’m rather successful at a young age, professionally. There are many things I want from this yummy Paleo life…but ultimately I want to live a long, long life with plenty vibrant health all the way through. I want to spend my hard earned retirement riding bikes, climbing mountains, and skiing snowy peaks not riding to the doctor, climbing over the mountains of prescription pills or sliding into arthritic immobility. I wanna hold my great grandchildren, and be strong enough not to drop them. Then, when the time does come for leaving this life it will be because I wore out, not because I rusted out.

I hope to make 2013 MY fitness year. I have been saying for a few years now that I am going to get back in shape, but I have yet to make it a reality. This year is different. I bought and read Melissa’s “Well Fed” book and joined my local CrossFit gym. The Paleo diet just makes sense to me. Before switching over to Paleo, I was a vegetarian. I never really wanted to be fully vegetarian, but great, wholesome, and compassionate meat was hard to find. Now it’s more available in the Austin area and I am on board. I can’t wait to see the changes the Paleo diet promises to bring.

But I just started Paleo on a group challenge thing last month, and WOW – I feel so good! But I definitely need help in keeping this going long-term, and getting my family on board (or at least at much as possible!) I want Living Paleo to help me stay motivated to keep this up, and be a good influence to those around me!

Last June I was diagnosed with fibroid tumors in and around my uterus. After a little pleasure reading about the causes of these tumors I began to modify my diet and eventually over time and more research I eventually switched to a Paleo diet. Not only did the growth rate if my tumors slow but when the time came that I had to have surgery my recovery rate went from an expected 6 weeks to being back in the gym the day after I checked out if the hospital. A week after that I was back in my regular boot camp classes and doing light intervals on the treadmill. I firmly believe my choices in circuit & cross training as well as the choices of food I put in my body have led to my quick recovery.

I have been struggling to conceive after the death of my premature son almost 2 years ago and I think Paleo might be the key to getting my body 100% healthy. I have Hashimotos too, and I think that could be playing a role in my health issues. I have heard that the paleo diet helps people with this condition. Once I get pregnant I plan on sticking to this lifestyle to benefit my baby’s health as well. I think I just need some support to get me to a place where I can do this for more than 30 days at a time.

foodwise, i’m fortunate enough to live in oakland and have some pretty good “ins” with some of the local farms and as such eat high class on a low budget. i’ve been attracted to and found most reasonable a diet which i learned recently is being dubbed “paleo”. i’m somewhat surprised and very excited that there is such enthusiasm surrounding what seems to be a very sensible and doable approach to nutrition. hope for humanity, gosh it’s been ages. i’d like living paleo to assist with the energy i need to hustle my way through the busy schedule i set for myself as well as provide the calm needed to combat the overstimulation that often comes with urban living. cutting wheat and dairy from my diet, and rediscovering animal fat were the best decisions i ever made. i’m no nutritional expert, but i have no problem strongly recommending radical changes in diet to combat what ails one. 2013 will be the year of dialing in some loose ends. experimenting with organ meats and going for the fish sauce. stoked to have found your blog. best wishes

I had a litany of health issues that I thought were simply a side effect of being 42 (sore joints, hair thinning, intestinal issues, sluggish and on and on) she mentioned that Paleo could help with all of the above so I started researching and it sounds like yes, it can. She also suggested I see an Dr. to check my thyroid and I was diagnosed with Hashimoto disease. Apparently paleo is the way to go to get all of this under control. All goals should be “SMART” goals…Specific, Measurable, Action-Oriented (or Accountable depending on the coach), Realistic/Relevant and Time Based…
Since I spent part of 2011 and all of 2012 on my back due to a back injury and had spinal fusion surgery in August, my goals are:
    1) Now that PT is finished, start my own exercise program at home and stick with it. To start 10 minutes/day 4 days a week, increasing to 20 minutes 4 days a week after a month and 30 minutes 4 days a week after 2 months. This includes stretching and cardio. Re-evaluate after 3 months. Use my fitness education, certifications and if necessary, ASK FOR HELP!
    2) Spend 2 hours weekly planning and shopping for Plan Paleo meals, cook on Sundays for the week. Log meals on http://www.paleotrail.com. Review meals weekly (during planning session) and tweak as necessary. Begin Sunday, 1/6/13.
    3) Lose the 30lbs I gained while injured plus possibly 10 more (depending on how my jeans fit) by June 16, 2013. 1-2 lbs/week for 23 weeks is realistic. Actions from #1 and 2.
    4) Go back to CrossFit by June 17, 2013. Re-establish former PR’s by December 31st.
    5) Spend 1 hour a week researching other sources of income to supplement current job. Make a decision by January 31st. Contact current lead for answer by January 7th.
    6) Spend at least 3 hours weekly out with friends, STOP BEING DEPRESSED AND HIDING!!!
That’s it for now…Good luck to everyone!

Also, after 29 years of eating disorders, it was time to stop the bullshit. This is the first time in my life that I feel extremely comfortable in my body, and stronger than ever in spirit.

I find myself if a job that is not fullfilling, with the mental knowledge that i need to do something I love and believe in to have lived fully. I just can’t quite cut the ties of that regular pay check. Yet I think it is this life with it’s regular paycheck that is the sorce of my unhealthy troubles. I think I would still have troubles if I stopped living this life and started living my dream but they would be healthy troubles, troubles that I believe in. I’m a RN. I’m obese. I know standard nutrition. I’ve eaten organic all my life. I have no chronic illnesses diagnosed. I’m sure I have some autoimmune this and that because my joints ache and my skin is very dry. I hope to get up the gumption to start paleo. I’ve been overweight all my adult life. I crave to help others gain health by eating and living right. I think the reason I have no diabetes or other syndroms is that I have stayed away from margarine and processed foods. I need to work that into paleo to lose the weight once and for all so I can start helping get the world health instead of just waisting tax payers money at a desk job filling out tons of paper work on clients. Watching their health and mine decrease yearly because of pills and food. Give a strainger a birthday gift that could help me and help me help a bunch of other people.

I have battled autoimmune diseases for YEARS and never ONCE felt like I had a chance at feeling better, until I discovered paleo. Honestly, I have cried more times than I would like to admit after reading story after story about how amazing this lifestyle is and makes you feel, because for the first time ever, I felt like I could wholeheartedly LIVE again, without pain, without being depressed without lethargy. But those are the exact things I have freed myself from over the past few weeks since I have taken paleo on and I have never been happier in my life!

For 2013 my goal is simple, I want to continue to lead this lifestyle of positive mind, body and soul health and happiness but more importantly, I want to share it with the people I love so that they can feel the same freedom I have felt! Too many of my family and friends suffer on a day to day basis and I want to see that end. I have NEVER been motivated and READY to do this, as I am now.

Thank you to all the amazing people who, without even knowing it, touched my life! :)

My goal for 2013 is to lose the 50+ pounds I have gained over the past 5 years after finally being diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and then spending the next two years in a nightmare of
trying various medications and dealing with their side effects to get the Fibromyalgia under control. I have been out of work on disability since Nov 2, 2012. My Son in law and my Daughter have been living the Paleo life style for several months. I started around Nov16th
I have lost 8 pounds and I have come to a dead stop for 2 weeks. I exercise mildly, I do Zumba, because it’s fun. What else is there that I can do.

We have been following the Paleo/low carb diet for most if 2012 and are loving the way we feel and look. Having a ‘for dummies’ manual will greatly help us achieve even more well being.

I have been sick since 2007. Doctors had no clue and either told me it was female issues or just wanted me to take drugs. I had been fighting with myself to try and live as normal a life as possible. It wasn’t until I went to see another chiropractor in 2012 when he told me about Paleo eating. I have been trying my best to stick to, but due to holidays and being human, I have fallen off the wagon, but get right back on. Eating this way has really made a difference in my life. It really sucks when you husband goes to hug you and you have to tell him to let go because it hurts too much. I am working really hard this year to live Paleo all the way through and make it for the rest of my life.

Book sounds great. Congrats on this huge accomplishment. I will be growing in my knowledge of and implementation of a paleo lifestyle this year because I think this is the way God designed us to eat. And when I eat as he created me to, I will be clear of so many of the distractions (like fatigue, aches, sickness, cravings/addictions) that take my eyes off of him. I totally agree with St Iraneus, “the glory of God is a person fully alive.” I want to be fully alive and embracing the paleo eating plan seems like a great way to deal with the physical piece of this. :)

What would I want ‘Living Paleo’ to do for me? Well, I’m already a bit of a fan but I’m a bit of a novice paleo eater but I know that this diet makes sense. But this year I want to go further. For one thing, I’m 50 in October and I want to be the fittest 50 year old I have ever known. I’m also going for my brown belt in kickboxing, a hobby I took up 3 years ago, and, the one thing I’ve always wanted to do, I’m recording some tracks to release my first album at last! For this, I want to bit literally fighting fit, I want to look so good that people dispute my date of birth, I need energy and health and spark and, the one thing that always eludes me and which is crucial to attaining all of these, I need a good night’s sleep night after night after night and if this lifestyle can help me achieve that, it would be so valuable. And if I can achieve all that by this time next year, it will have been one hell of a 2013. :-)

I just found out about eating paleo this past year. I am in the military and when I am deployed or in the field I eat so much processed unhealthy food. I decided when I can control my food I want to eat healthy. Being healthy and in shape is extremely important in my line of work and eating paleo helps.

I’m currently a skater for the North Star Roller Girls. I’m a 2012 rookie, drafted onto a team in August after picking up my first skates a couple months earlier. Nutrition and fitness have become incredibly important to my practices, my bouts, and my cross-training. I’m new to the idea of Paleo and excited to learn more about it.
Derby is huge for me. I love it almost more than my dog(okay, I could never love anything more than her!) and it’s the first thing I think of when I wake up and the last thing I think of before I go to bed. I practice hard and often. I’ll be starting crossfit in a week or so, too. I want Paleo to help me to be able to push myself and give me the means to become stronger, leaner, energetic. I want to learn how to get the most out of my diets and workouts.
I made our B travel team and would love to put the work into making our All-Star A Travel Team in my first season as a skater. To do so, I need a little help and a better understanding, a little education.
My 2013 goal is to apply Paleo to my lifestyle(maybe change a little of my friend’s and teammates eating habits), strengthen myself, get a few roller derby achievements under my rookie belt, do an unassisted pullup, and flip one of those giant tires :)

I’m looking for a full-fledged re-start this year. I changed my eating habits by starting with Atkins in June of 2011, then found the primal/paleo community several months later. In February of 2012, after losing almost 50 pounds, I was sidetracked by thyroid cancer. Wow, having no thyroid really messes with your metabolism. I gained 15 pounds back in less than a month. I gratefully haven’t gained any more than that, but I haven’t been able to lose any weight since then. As a diabetic, I’ve already been able to get rid of one of the three diabetes meds I’ve been on, and my A1C is usually between 5.3 and 5.8, but I really want to lose 30-40 more pounds and be the healthiest I can be so that I never have to worry about the horrific side effects uncontrolled diabetes can inflict. So I’m looking forward to tweaking the primal/paleo lifestyle and getting the best results in 2013!

Living paleo is a life changing lifestyle that everyone should subscribe to. I will educate everyone I know about the positive life altering effects of Living Paleo! Pick me!

I would love Living Paleo to help me develop a new relationship with food and my body in 2013. I would love to change my lifestyle and finally end the 22 year battle with severe anorexia that almost took my life so that I can love and serve my husband and children fully and truly be a beacon of hope for others struggling with eating disorders.

In 2012 I cut out dairy and solved a lot of digestive issues I was having. For 2013 I would like Living Paleo to help me learn to eat even healthier and see what amazing improvements I can see by eating cleaner. I would also love to pass this information on to my family and friends who also have medical/health issues so that we can all have the best year possible!

I want to learn more about how to incorporate Paleo into my vegetarian diet, and learn how to eat and prepare healthy, balanced meals and snacks.

My Goal is to be able to make better choices when out of my own kitchen. I do fine when I can eat my own food, but I am in sales, and often fine myself outside of my box.

I really need to loose 120 lbs. I’ve heard the Paleo diet could help me to accomplish my goal. Your book could help me with understanding the new way of living for me and how the Paleo diet works. All other diets have failed for me, but with your step by step approach, I know I could do it. Thank you for the chance to win a copy of your book, and to help me get my life back.

Would love to read this book! My goal is to lose the last 15lbs I want to loose and strengthen my body. I have been strict paleo for a few months, but have been dabbling with it for over a year.
