Is mini-fasting healthy?
Some may argue that intermittent fasting isn’t healthy. And there are several theories (and myths) circulating. As I previously mentioned, fasting is a form of stress. But mini-fasting only involves a short period of stress. And these short bursts of stress are not only safe, they can significantly improve your health. In 2015, researchers found that those on a fast-mimicking diet showed reductions in risk factors linked to diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and aging. Improvements included weight loss, reduced markers of inflammation, and lower blood glucose. That’s pretty amazing for just a few days of fasting each month! And with regard to the myth that fasting will cause your metabolism to slow down to a crawl–don’t believe it! Because it’s just that: a myth. In fact, one recent study found that when volunteers fasted for 84 hours, their basal metabolic rates went up.
