What Is Collagen, and Why Is It Important?
Of all the proteins in our bodies, collagen reigns supreme as the most abundant protein. Collagen is a coarse and fibrous protein whose job is to connect other complex structures together.
You can think of collagen as the scaffolding of your skin and connective tissues. It keeps things tightly bound and connected together. It can also support the function of our skin, joints, cartilage, ligaments, tendons, and bones.
As we mature, our body’s natural ability to produce collagen begins to decline. This can start to happen in our twenties, and external factors like sun exposure, smoking, and alcohol intake, can all have an effect on this decline.
When collagen production decreases, we may begin to notice things like crow’s feet, and other fine lines and wrinkles, and sagging skin.
Eating a diet rich in essential nutrients, like collagen, is one way to support your body’s waning collagen production. When we consume collagen, our digestive systems break it down into amino acids.
Amino acids are the “building blocks” of all other proteins in the body. Once collagen is broken down into amino acids, they are then sent all over the body to wherever protein is needed.
Amino acids play many important roles in our bodies. Alongside supporting collagen and protein production, they can also support gut health. Two amino acids, glutamine and glycine, can help support good gut bacteria, support cell growth, promote a healthy intestinal lining, and help our digestive systems break down fats more completely.
Dr. Kellyann’s hydrolyzed collagen is made from grinding the materials of hormone-free, grass-fed beef raised in Germany and Brazil. After the animal matter has been ground, it is soaked in hydrochloric acid and then dehydrated.
Food for Thought: What Recipes Can You Make With Our Super Chocolate Smoothie?
Dr. Kellyann’s Super Chocolate Smoothie packs in so much chocolatey flavor it is extremely satisfying on its own. If you like to get creative in the kitchen and want to change things up, there are many different yummy recipes you can try.
We love to add a ¼ of a frozen banana, a ¼ cup of frozen raspberries, and unsweetened almond milk into a blender to make a rich, decadent smoothie. Try adding ¼ of a ripe banana, one tablespoon of peanut butter (or substitute for almond butter or another nut butter), and dairy-free milk to create a chocolate peanut butter protein shake.
Add a little vanilla extract or use vanilla almond milk for an extra kick of flavor. Add ice cubes, chia seeds, or Greek yogurt to thicken up your protein smoothie, or add extra cacao powder to create a double-chocolate milkshake.
We’ve already sweetened this milkshake with monk fruit extract, which is much sweeter than regular cane sugar. However, if you’re craving a little extra sweetener and your diet allows it, use some maple syrup to take your chocolate protein shake recipe to the next level.

Bone Broth vs. Stock: What’s the Difference?
Although made with similar ingredients, bone broth and stock differ by their cooking times. Stock is made by boiling animal bones (usually bovine, poultry, or fish bones) with herbs and spices and a mix of chopped onions, carrots, and celery.
