Bone Broth and Collagen
Healthy, Anti-Inflammatory Foods
Studies show that participants who intermittent fast (a.k.a mini-fast) see a greater reduction in fasting insulin as well as insulin resistance.
This is important because insulin is a fat-storing hormone. In order to burn fat and keep it off your insulin levels need to remain low, and your cells need to be able to respond efficiently to insulin when it is released.
Intermittent fasting is my secret weapon when it comes to keeping insulin low and in turn allowing glucose to be burned as energy instead of stored as fat. So mini-fasting burns belly fat AND helps keep it off.
In addition, fasting rids your body of toxins which gives your metabolism a boost and helps you look and feel healthier. It also results in your body releasing a natural anti-inflammatory, and we know what kind of chaos inflammation unleashes in our body. And it increases your HGH (Human Growth Hormone) levels which is responsible for helping create lean muscle, burn fat, and supports healthy skin.
There are two very effective ways to intermittent fast. One is to eat normally 5 days a week and fast for 2 days (between 24 and 36 hours). Another is to eat all your meals within a 7 to 8 hour window and fast the other 16 to 17 hours. I offer a plan that effectively incorporates each one.
In my Bone Broth Diet, I recommend taking a 24 – 32 hour break from eating two non-consecutive days a week. For example, you stop eating after dinner and don’t eat again until dinner the next day. This is consider a 5:2 weekly plan.
Another intermittent fasting option that I recommend in The 10-Day Belly Slimdown is trying is to shorten your eating window on a daily basis. This one is a 16:8 daily plan.
Gelatin-rich bone broth is a delicious source of collagen with considerable health benefits so it is incorporated into all my plans for its gut-healing benefits.
Plus, it fills you up without adding pounds. Bone broth and bone-broth soups are rich, complex, hearty, and soul-satisfying. Bone broth comes loaded with amino acids and minerals like magnesium and phosphorus, as well as healthy fatty acids and iron from the bone marrow, and it feeds your body deep nutrition.
Because bone broth is hearty with only a few calories and essentially no carbs I recommend it my plans during fasting windows to help with cravings and crashes. And because it low in calories and carbs you'll still be burning fat, detoxing, healing your digestive system, and improving your overall health.
Plus, bone broth while intermittent fasting substantially reduce the chances of fasting headaches, lack of concentration, and the jittery, shaky side effects some experience.
I’ve been talking about collagen for years. It’s my secret potion for youthful skin, agile joints, a healthy gut, a smaller belly, and so much more.
Collagen is one of the most abundant proteins in your body. You’ll find it in your skin, hair, nails, cartilage, and bones. As we age, our bodies naturally produce less collagen. In order to slow down the aging process, it’s important to protect your collagen by reducing your exposure to toxins and eating an antioxidant rich diet filled with lots of colorful vegetables.
It’s also important to boost the synthesis of new collagen. To do so, you must give your body the right building blocks, which primarily consists of the amino acids glycine and proline. And collagen protein powders as well as bone broth are packed with them.
In two double-blind, placebo-controlled studies, researchers found 8 weeks of collagen supplementation lead to a 12% increase in skin moisture, a 9% increase in collagen density, and a 31.2% reduction in collagen degradation when compared to the placebo group.
Collagen also fights inflammation thanks to glycine, an abundant amino acid in collagen supplements that has been shown to reduce local and systemic inflammation. This is important because inflammation is linked to every modern disease and you can’t lose weight if your body is inflamed.
Lowering inflammation also reduces symptoms of autoimmune disorders, which is why my patients with arthritis, celiac disease, and psoriasis swear by the healing powers of collagen.
It also eases joint pain according to a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind study on athletes with joint pain. These athletes experienced a significant reduction in pain (assessed by a physician) after 24 weeks of supplementation with hydrolyzed collagen as compared to the placebo group.
So you can see why getting your daily dose of collagen is a huge part of my plans.
