Dr. Kellyann is a naturopathic physician and certified nutrition consultant with over 20 years of clinical experience. She is one of the few practitioners in the United States certified in biological medicine by the esteemed Dr. Thomas Rau of the Paracelsus Klinik Lustmuhle in Switzerland. She currently practices as a concierge doctor, treating patients in New York and Los Angeles focusing on healthy weight-loss and aging.

What kind of fasting does Dr. Kellyann recommend?

Dr. Kellyann is a fan of what she likes to call “mini-fasting” which is a form of intermittent fasting that uses bone broth to make time-restricting eating comfortable and doable.

You can read more about intermittent fasting with bone broth here.

Does bone broth break a fast?

If you are fasting for autophagy any food or any amount of calories will break that fast. Fasting for autophagy is a water fast (unsweetened coffee or tea is acceptable) and Dr. Kellyann does not recommend water fasts.

When fasting for weight loss bone broth, collagen coffee, or even keto coffee is allowed because it will not raise your blood sugar or insulin and this will keep you in a fat-burning state for longer.

How do you make bone broth?

Some people are intimidated by the thought of making bone broth but there is no need to be! Bone broth is actually very easy to make. Check out this guide to making bone broth. And be sure to check all my bone broth recipes here

Can I use store-bought bone broth?

Yes, you can use store-bought bone broth, but there are a few things to look for when purchasing bone broth.

  • Make sure you are buying bone broth and not just stock or broth. Stock and broth won’t contain the same amount of gelatin as bone broth and it’s the gelatin that really makes bone broth “liquid gold”.
  • Look for “bone broth” on the label and check out the protein count. True bone broth will have close to 9 grams of protein per serving compared to 1 or 2, or zero, in stock or broth.
  • Choose a bone broth that has less than 200 mg of sodium, or less, serving.
  • And be sure to choose a bone broth without sugar, artificial flavors, or MSG.

Dr. Kellyann has several options for bone broth when you don’t want to make it yourself. Check out Dr. Kellyann’s powdered bone broth here and her liquid bone broths here.

What’s the difference between bone broth and collagen?

Collagen comes from those tough to eat portions of animals, such as the bones and ligaments. When you prepare bone broth, you’ll end up with nutrient-rich gelatin. Gelatin is basically cooked collagen.

Hydrolyzed collagen also comes from animal collagen and shares the same amino acid profile as bone broth, but hydrolyzed collagen is broken down further into easily digestible peptides.

Because bone broth and hydrolyzed collagen are made in a similar manner either one is a great source for collagen supplementation. You can read more here.

How much bone broth and collagen do you recommend consuming per day?

I recommend 1 to 2 cups of bone broth daily (8 to 16 ounces) or 10 to 30 grams of hydrolyzed collagen daily. You can read more about the benefits of bone broth here and all about collagen here.
