Roasted Portobello Burger "Buns"

Roasted Portobello Burger "Buns"

When it comes to crafting the perfect burger, the focus is often on the patty. Whether you're a beef purist, a chicken aficionado, or a veggie burger devotee, the centerpiece of any burger is typically the filling. But today, let's shift the spotlight and celebrate the often-overlooked hero of the burger: the bun. Specifically, we're diving into the deliciously satisfying world of Dr. Kellyann's Roasted Portobello Mushroom Burger Buns.

Why Portobello Buns?

Portobello mushrooms are not only a fantastic substitute for traditional bread buns, but they also bring a wealth of flavor and texture that can elevate any burger. These large, meaty mushrooms are naturally gluten-free, low in carbs, and rich in nutrients like vitamin D, potassium, and antioxidants. They have a savory umami taste that pairs beautifully with a variety of fillings, making them the perfect choice for a healthy, gourmet twist on your classic burger.

Prep time: 5 min • Cook time: 10 min • Yield: 4 servings

  • 4 portobello mushrooms
  • Coconut Oil (optional, for grilling)

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Line a sheet pan with parchment paper.
  2. Gently wipe the mushroom caps to clean. Break off stems and reserve for another use. Use a spoon, carefully scoop out all the gills on the underside of the mushroom caps.
  3. Place the caps on the prepared pan. Bake for 5 to 7 minutes on each side, or until the caps soften.
  4. Serve on top of your favorite patty & add all of your garnishes.

Note: Alternatively, you can grill the mushroom caps. Spray them with coconut oil before grilling.

By making the bun the star of your next burger, you'll not only impress your guests with a unique twist but also enjoy a healthier, more flavorful meal. Roasted Portobello Buns are versatile, delicious, and easy to prepare. So next time you plan a burger night, give this recipe a try and let the humble bun take center stage.
