Do you frequently find yourself feeling like you are drowning in a pool of overwhelming tasks and challenges? Does the very thought of socializing, or even getting out of bed bring you anxiety or moodiness? If you’re realizing that the little things in life have begun to turn into stressful challenges that seem out of your reach, it’s time to take action. How many times have you found yourself blaming lack of sleep or too many items on your to-do list for your blues? It may be time to honestly evaluate just how long you have been feeling down and pinpoint all the areas in your life that are suffering; physically, emotionally, and cognitively. By learning how you can recognize the various signs and symptoms of chronic stress and taking baby steps to reduce the harmful effects, you will slowly begin your journey back to health. If the constant pressure in your life has you feeling helpless, disillusioned, and utterly exhausted, you may be on the path to burnout.  What is Burnout? Burnout is brought on by excessive, prolonged stress. It causes feelings of helplessness, making you feel stuck in a trap of constant emotional, mental, and physical exhaustion. Burnout may stem from feelings of being overwhelmed or an inability to live up to others’ standards or expectations. It can keep you up at night, fraught with anxiety, and lead to bad sleeping habits. It may alienate you from loved ones or make every task seem like an unattainable uphill challenge. Think back to the last time you felt full of motivation, energy, and hope. Has it been a while? Do you find yourself feeling stuck on the couch, unwilling to leave the house to engage with others, or complete tasks? Burnout can wipe out your desire to perform your regular daily duties in your home, social, and work environments. Is this starting to sound all too familiar? Let’s take a look at how this process begins with stress and progresses into a snowball of concerns. What is Stress? Your body is built to respond to various demands, including potentially dangerous situations. Stress is how your body reacts to and adjusts to these situations. When you begin to sense or even perceive a threat, your body’s defense mechanisms trigger a helpful, automatic reaction. We call this our “fight-or-flight” response or “stress response.”  But at a certain point, you may cross a threshold that causes stress to stop being helpful. It has the potential to become harmful to your health, causing significant damage to your mood, productivity, and relationships, while creating bad sleeping habits, and lowering your quality of health. But that’s not all my friends. As your stress becomes chronic, your systems create reactions that may lead to even more severe health problems. Issues caused by excessive stress may include: Autoimmune diseases Depression and anxiety Various aches and pains throughout your body Bad sleeping habits Digestive issues Skin conditions, such as eczema or acne breakouts Heart disease Weight concerns Reproductive issues  Cognitive problems such as memory loss Adrenal fatigue What is Considered Chronic Stress? When your body continues to battle chronic stress, you lose interest in the world around you. Chronic stress affects your nervous system, leading to a state of hopelessness, negativity, and helplessness. Chronic stress can affect all areas of your life across every system in your body. You may find chronic stress can: Suppress your immune system Cause disruptions and discomforts in your digestive system Be responsible for reproductive systems issues Place you at higher risk of heart attack and stroke Fast track the aging process Cause cognitive changes within your brain which can make you more susceptible to depression, anxiety, and other mental health concerns Lead you down the road to adrenal fatigue and burnout Result in bad sleeping habits Recognizing Signs of Stress That May Lead to Burnout One of the most dangerous things about stress is that it can sneak up on you before you realize what’s happening. Trust me when I tell you it’s not a road you want to find yourself on. It may begin with a bit of worry at the office or home with your family's demands. Over time, you develop bad sleeping habits and pushing yourself a little more to get things done while ignoring the signs of real stress. Soon, you’re getting used to the daily battles, and even convincing yourself it’s just your usual way of life. This feeling becomes so familiar; you stop noticing just how much it is taking a toll on you. And before you know it, you've dug yourself into a hole that seems too steep to climb your way out of. But there's hope! Understanding and learning to recognize some of the typical stress overload warning signs and symptoms can help you handle or even prevent this horrible fall into burnout. Familiarize yourself with the various manifestations of burnout. Ask yourself if any of these signs or symptoms already apply to you: Emotional symptoms: Unable to find pleasure or happiness, depression Anxiety Moody, irritable, or experiencing anger easily Feelings of being overwhelmed, even with the smallest tasks Often experiencing feelings loneliness and isolation Other mental or emotional health problems Cognitive symptoms: Memory loss Inability to focus and lack of concentration Lacking in judgment Viewing the world in a negative light Anxiety, racing thoughts A constant state of worry Sleep disturbances Physical symptoms: Aches and pains throughout your body Unexplainable diarrhea or constipation Nausea, dizziness, disorientation Unable to explain chest pains, rapid heart rate, shortness of breath Decrease or loss of sex drive Frequently sick Unexplainable exhaustion  Behavioral symptoms: Extreme increase or decrease in appetite Bad sleeping habits, including too much or not enough sleep, unable to sleep through the night soundly Withdrawing from friends and family Lack of interest in work or social events Putting off or neglecting responsibilities Relying on alcohol, drugs or other vices to relax Developing nervous habits Reduction in productivity Knowing the Warning Signs and Symptoms of Burnout While chronic stress may have similar symptoms, recognizing you have officially hit burnout is essential to your health. Reaching burnout is a gradual process and often unrecognizable, sneaking up on you while in turmoil. Signs and symptoms are subtle at first, so knowing what to look for can be incredibly beneficial to your health: Physical Signs and Symptoms of Burnout Feelings of adrenal fatigue Weak immune system and easily sick Unexplainable headaches, muscle, and joint aches Drastic changes in your appetite Emotional Signs and Symptoms of Burnout Extreme feelings of failure or low self-esteem Feelings of defeat, helpless, and loneliness Extreme lack of motivation Feelings of negativity towards work and social engagements Behavioral Signs and Symptoms of Burnout Withdrawing from work and home responsibilities Withdrawing from friends and family Extreme procrastination or avoidance of daily tasks Avoiding work, tardiness, or skipping out early Using food, alcohol, or drugs as an escape Developing bad sleeping habits Recognizing the Differences Between Stress and Burnout Not quite sure where you fall? You aren’t alone. The gradual shift from chronic stress to burnout can make it difficult to differentiate between the two, so let’s break it down a bit. Think of stress as “too much" and burnout as "not enough." When you are under stress, you may feel too much pressure to perform tasks and achieve goals. Burnout will leave you feeling empty without enough hope, motivation to try, or feeling there’s nothing left in you to give. Even under extreme stress, you are still able to envision a light at the end of the tunnel. There is a glimmer of hope, and you see a possible way out. Here are a few handy comparisons to gauge where you may fall:                                 What are the signs of stress?  Excessive engagement Hypersensitive, over-emotional Hyperactive, elevating all tasks to urgent Loss of energy, adrenal fatigue Anxiety Primarily physical symptoms What are the signs of burnout? Disengagement Often numb to emotions Feelings of extreme helpless and hopeless Extreme decrease in motivation Depression and detachment from others Primarily emotional symptoms What is Adrenal Fatigue? You may often hear the term “adrenal fatigue" and the arguments surrounding it. So, let’s take a deeper dive into adrenal fatigue. While not clinically recognized as a diagnosis, adrenal fatigue describes a group of nonspecific symptoms. This may include various body aches and pains, exhaustion, nervousness, bad sleeping habits, and various digestive issues. Adrenal fatigue may be a condition stemming from the adrenal glands not producing enough hormones, yet overexerting themselves while trying. Long battles with mental, emotional, and physical stress are often a common link to adrenal fatigue.  The hormones your adrenal glands produce are responsible for managing inflammation and helping to maintain your metabolism. They work to regulate your salt and water balance, blood pressure, and stress levels during your fight or flight responses. Although it is not currently an official medical diagnosis, certain conditions can negatively affect your adrenal glands and are certainly worth noting: What are the Symptoms and Signs of Adrenal Fatigue? Adrenal fatigue theories explain that your adrenal glands will activate under the pressures of stress. Long-term stress causes your glands to experience fatigue and feel unable to handle your body’s demands. Think about your work environment. Is your job causing you high stress? Are you a single parent, shift worker, or first responder? You may be at higher risk of experiencing adrenal fatigue due to the stressful demands of your job expectations. Possible Health Issues Due to Adrenal Fatigue Adrenal insufficiency happens when the adrenal glands are not releasing enough hormones, including cortisol. So, what’s the story behind the unpleasant experiences of bloating? It can hit at any time, any meal, and has ruined an event or two for all of us, right? The truth is, any change in your regular dietary routine can cause some bloating. It’s that feeling of an enormous swollen tummy and uncomfortably backed up gut that makes you want to crawl under the covers and suffer in solitude. If you’re nodding your head right now, you’re not the only one. And you’re about to learn the secret to beating the bloat! No more worrying about how you’ll feel after a meal, whether at home, a restaurant, or event. You’ll be able to enjoy yourself as well as the foods you eat with a simple 5-day cleanse.   What’s Causing Me to Bloat? Good question. It's certainly not a pleasant experience, and some of you may deal with it more often than others. One reason for your misery could be a change in your eating habits. Next, add in your onion, celery, and red pepper. Stir frequently, for approximately 4 minutes, or until your veggies are soft. Add in your garlic and cook for an additional 30 seconds. Add the shiitake mushrooms, 6 ounces of the cremini, the white mushrooms, thyme, salt, and black pepper. Continue to cook while stirring, for 7 to 10 minutes, or until the mushrooms begin to brown. Add in the broth and bring your pot to a boil. Reduce the heat to medium-low immediately. Simmer uncovered, while stirring occasionally, for 15 minutes, or until the mushrooms are softened. Remove pot from the heat. Add in the coconut milk and 3 ounces cremini mushrooms. Puree with a handheld immersion blender, food processor, or blender in small batches. Here’s the best advice I can give you – if you aren’t one hundred and ten percent positive your body can tolerate dairy products, AVOID them. Do yourself a favor and pass on dairy.         So Long to Soy How often have you heard how healthy soy is for your body? Replacing your usual dairy with soy was all the rage, right? When you commit to something as life-changing as my five-day Cleanse and Reset, you won’t want to lose those results you worked so hard to achieve. That’s why you always hear me talk about the Cleanse and Reset as a lifestyle change and not just another fad cleanse. I want to make sure you wake up every morning with an abundance of energy, radiant skin, and full of self-confidence. I didn't set out to only spread the word about the fantastic benefits of this five-day cleanse, but to teach others how to change their life habits. So, how do you keep the beautiful skin, energy, healthy body, and slimmed waistline? I call it the Dr. Kellyann’s Lifestyle Plan. Let me share with you how it will help you maintain your restored health. Meeting Your Ideal Weight If one of your motivators for committing to the Cleanse and Reset is to lose weight, then you’re on the right track. Yep, that “healthy” whole wheat bun you’ve chosen is comparable to eating a candy bar. Grains turn right into sugar in your body. If you have a habit of eating grains during every meal, you’ll be causing your insulin to continue to spike, telling your body to store belly fat. This belly fat is full of toxic chemicals that lead to additional weight gain and unhealthy cells.  The Path to More Inflammation Inflammation puts you on the road to early signs of aging, uncontrolled weight gain, lack of energy, and the risk of countless diseases and illnesses. Grains also contain substances known to cause leaky gut. And as you know, an unhealthy gut leads to nothing good!  Gliadin, a protein in wheat gluten, and wheat germ agglutinin, a protein in whole wheat found in high levels, are linked to the increase of intestinal permeability and the triggering of an immune response.  Grain: Your Skin’s Enemy After working so hard to restore your skin’s vibrant glow, diminish lines, dryness, and acne, hold onto it! By sticking to a grain-filled diet, you’re undoing all the good your five-day cleanse brought you. Grains cause inflammation, which we know will promote your acne breakouts. Carbohydrates, in general, are responsible for creating the majority of acne issues. But there’s more! Grains are guilty of causing:          Psoriasis         Eczema         Rosacea These are skin concerns that affect many people. When grains trigger this insensitivity, you’ll experience cravings and wanting to eat even if you're not really hungry.  Misleading Health Food Ready for another shocker? Grains offer a poor source of nutrients. The exceptions are those that are added by the manufacturers adds in. Besides, you can get the nutrients in grains from better sources. Would it surprise you to hear that your body doesn’t even need grains? Think about it. There isn’t a minimum daily requirement listed for them because there hasn’t been any science to show that our bodies need them. Instead, focus on healthy fats. Your body craves them and relies on them to:         Produce hormones         Build cell membranes         Support brain health Without them, you’ll gain a ton of weight, feel sluggish, irritable, speed up the signs of aging, and feel cloudy-minded. You also deprive your body of ceramides. Ceramides are the fat molecules that sit on the top layer of your skin. These molecules are what make your skin appear soft and hydrated. When you begin to see wrinkles, it’s usually due to missing ceramides. You’ll also want to fill up on plenty of non-starchy vegetables and add in small portions of healthy carbs, like fruits. To make sure you’re getting the most nutrients and the least toxins, try to stick to buying meats that are free from nitrates and sugars. Pastured meat and eggs are always great choices. Avoid recipes where you can't remove the skin from chicken or the fat from beef — this is where most toxins collect.         Healthy Fats Including healthy fats in your diet is a must. You can include clarified butter or ghee, olives and olive oil, coconut and coconut oil, avocados and avocado oil, nuts, and seeds. My Cleanse and Reset book will provide you with a detailed list. Don’t cheat yourself out of these fats. Your body will reward you for it.  And do you recall those amazing ceramides I mentioned earlier? Healthy fats are where you’ll be getting them from.         Non- Starchy Vegetables Get ready to load up your plate. Non-starchy veggies give you all the nutrients and fiber your body requires to stay trim, healthy, and bloat-free.         Starchy Vegetables and Fruits In small portions, they will provide a little additional boost of energy whenever you need it. Just remember the keyword here is small. When you’re more aware of your portion sizes, you're able to enjoy the foods you love to splurge on. Just stick to my 80/20 template, and you’ll be on the right path to maintaining the benefits of your five-day cleanse. Take a peek in the mirror and stay focused on the incredible work you did to cleanse and reset your body, and you'll find all the motivation you need! The 80% Template After you cleanse and reset, proper portion control is essential to keeping your slim, sexy figure, radiant skin, and healthy body. I’ve outlined the portion guidelines I stick to, so you never have to guess.         Non- Starchy Vegetables A proper serving of non- starchy veggies should at least be the size of a softball. Take advantage of these fabulous veggies. Fill up on two to three servings. The health benefits are endless and will further extend the results of your five-day cleanse.         Starchy Vegetables  One serving of starchy veggies, including sweet potato, kohlrabi, or winter squash, should equal the size of a baseball for ladies, while men should eat a portion around the size of a softball. But there’s a slight catch. Only eat these starchy veggies when you feel you need an extra spurt of energy. This is perfect for days you’ve implemented a strenuous workout routine.         Fruit Portions After you cleanse and reset your body, continue eating healthy portions of fruit. One serving size of fruit is about half of an individual piece. So, half an orange or apple is sufficient to maintain your health after you cleanse and reset. For smaller fruits, think in terms of a tennis ball–size serving, or approximately half a cup. This includes your grapes, berries, and tropical fruits. Make sure to spread your servings throughout the day to evenly spread out your sugar intake. You'll also want to limit your fruit servings to around two per day.         Fat Portions Here are some great guidelines to keep handy: o   One serving of oil or clarified butter is equal to one tablespoon o   One serving of olives, seeds, nuts, or coconut flakes is roughly the size of one closed handful o   One serving of nut butter is equal to one tablespoon o   One serving of avocado is approximately 1⁄4 to 1⁄2 of the avocado o   One serving of coconut milk is equal to 1⁄3 cup o   One serving of almond milk is equivalent to eight ounces o   One serving of chia seeds is equal to four teaspoons o   One serving of flaxseed is equal to two tablespoons o   One serving of hemp seeds is equal to two tablespoons Maintaining a Healthy, Happy Gut Ahhh, the key to your body’s health and wellness. I want you to work diligently to keep probiotic and prebiotic foods on your menu. Add them to your meals as often as you can. Probiotics are fermented foods containing healthy bacteria that will reseed your gut. These foods include pickles, sauerkraut, and kimchi. Helpful hint: Purchase these in the refrigerated section. Shelved versions are pasteurized, and the healthy bacteria have been killed off. Prebiotics are the foods that tend to act as fertilizer for your gut bacteria. These foods include onions, leeks, jicama, garlic, and unripe bananas. And just so you know— cocktails are allowed on your 80%  days! Just be sure you’re drinking sensibly and following the guidelines provided in my Cleanse and Reset. The Not-So-Healthy Health Foods Wondering why some of your favorite healthy choices foods aren’t in the 80% category? Here’s why:         Dairy The majority of my patients have come to realize that dairy products are what cause their bloating, blotchy skin, and additional skin concerns. Unless you’re 100% sure your body can handle dairy products, you should avoid them to help keep your incredible cleanse and reset efforts going.         Soy Soy foods are deemed healthy, yet most of them are “Frankenfoods” and loaded with garbage you don’t want. They contain substances that may tamper with your thyroid and put you at higher risk for autoimmune thyroid disease.       Seed oils Oils such as sunflower, corn, and canola are heavily processed and usually rancid when you purchase them. They have insanely high levels of inflammatory omega-6 fatty acids and deficient levels of anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids. Margarine is even worse for your body.  Just make it a habit to avoid these foods like the plague. And while you’re at it, add artificial sweeteners or additives to that list. The best way to keep those fabulous five-day cleanse benefits is to eat fresh. And there you have it! It’s a thin liquid and contains little fat. It won't count as fat during your cleanse, so feel free to use it as the liquid base for your shakes too. If you buy this type of coconut milk, make sure it doesn’t contain any added sugars or carrageenan, a highly inflammatory additive.   Canned coconut milk is a healthy fat and is closer to the consistency of whipping cream. It’s called for in several of my soup recipes, and you can add 1⁄3 cup to your shakes as well. You will need to count this towards your fat intake, however. That’s also why you’ll notice some shake recipes have two types of coconut milk: non‑canned coconut milk as your base and canned coconut milk as your fat. When you grab it, choose full‑fat rather than low‑fat. Trust me, not only does it taste better, but it's also actually better for you. Seriously. Non-starchy veggies will fill you with all the nutrients and fiber your body needs to keep weight off, reduce bloat, and keep your skin radiant. Take advantage.         Small-Portioned Starchy Fruits and Veggies This group provides an additional surge of energy when you need it. Can’t beat that!  Just be mindful of what “small” means, and you’ll be fine.       Powerful Proteins Fish, poultry, organ meats, eggs, beef, and of course, bone broth are excellent choices to maintain your health. Even the simplicity of adding in a collagen supplement works. These proteins provide essential amino acids needed to cleanse, repair, and rejuvenate your body. Ensure you’re getting the most amount of nutrients and the least amount of toxins by buying meats free from nitrates, nitrites, and sugars. Many toxins collect in the skin of the chicken and fat of beef. Take care to remove these as much as possible.         Healthy Fats Don’t forget to make healthy fats a part of your diet after your five-day cleanse. Or try out a few of those recipes you didn’t get to during your five-day cleanse.   The Template: Maintain with the Eighty Percent Rule When you complete the Cleanse and Reset, you'll want to do whatever it takes to keep that slim, sexy figure, youthful skin, and healthy, energetic body, right? Portion control is the key. I’ve done all the hard work for you and outlined the perfect eighty percent template. Learn it. Live it. Love it.         Fruit Once you wrap up your cleanse and reset, keep a healthy portion of fruit on your daily menu. One serving of fruit can be half an apple, or around half a cup of berries. They will help you maintain your health after you cleanse and reset. Spread out your fruit throughout the day to keep your sugar intake as evenly distributed as possible. Try to stick to no more than two servings per day.         Fat These are just a few of my favorite go-to healthy fats that help maintain my efforts after the five-day cleanse:   o   One serving of chia seeds is equal to four teaspoons o   One serving of flaxseed is equivalent to two tablespoons o   One serving of avocado is roughly 1⁄4 to 1⁄2 of the avocado o   One serving of coconut milk is equal to 1⁄3 cup o   One serving of almond milk is equivalent to eight ounces   Veggies         Non- Starchy Options A serving of non- starchy veggies should not exceed the size of a softball. You can fill up on two to three servings to satisfy your hunger and add extra nutrients.         Starchy Limit yourself to one serving of starchy veggies a day, but ONLY when you feel like you could use a little jolt of energy. Try them after a strenuous workout. Ladies should have a baseball-sized portion. Men should eat a portion roughly the size of a softball.   Keeping Your Gut Healthy Be sure to work on keeping probiotic and prebiotic foods in your daily diet. They work wonders for your maintenance, so add them to your meals whenever you can.   o   Prebiotics act a lot like fertilizer for your gut bacteria. These foods include leeks, garlic, onions, and unripe bananas. o   Probiotics contain healthy bacteria that help reseed your gut. You can include pickles, sauerkraut, and kimchi to your diet. Keep in mind; you'll benefit most by purchasing these in the refrigerated section. The healthy bacteria in these foods have been killed off from shelved versions because they’ve been pasteurized.   Unhealthy Health Foods So, why are some of your favorite healthy foods not on the eighty percent lists? The truth is, they may not be healthy for you after all:         Seed oils Sunflower, corn, and canola oils are heavily processed and are often rancid by the time you purchase them. They have horrendously high levels of inflammatory omega-6 fatty acids and low levels of anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids. Margarine is even worse for your health, so just stay away.       Dairy You may have come to realize that dairy products are the source of your bloating, and many of your skin concerns. If you aren’t absolutely sure your body tolerates dairy well, you should avoid them altogether. It will help you maintain those incredible cleanse and reset results.       Soy Soy foods are healthy, right? Most of them are “Frankenfoods” and loaded with not-so-good-for-you ingredients. They contain substances that can affect your thyroid and put you at risk for autoimmune thyroid disease. It’s just not worth it, so avoid soy products whenever you can.   When you put your health first and develop long-lasting habits, avoiding these foods won’t even be a thought. You put in the work to complete your five-day cleanse and deserve to make those benefits last. This is the perfect time to continue your healthy lifestyle journey. How to Sail Through the Holidays without Gaining a Pound

There is a way that you can enjoy the holidays, including great food, without going overboard.  Here are 5 suggestions that can help you stay in check during holiday time: Try the “3 Meal Magic” plan. Three meals with nothing in between but calorie-free liquids. You’ll be amazed at how much easier it is to abstain from unhealthy foods when you work within the three meal structure; only eat meals, not nibbley things like nuts, chips, or candies. You will be eliminating most of the trouble foods when you practice 3 Meal Magic! “Just one” Theory.Remember, there is no such thing as “just one”. If you think you can handle eating just one, or even just one handful of nibbley things, take a hard look as to how successful you’ve been at eating “just one”. “None” is better than “some”, especially if you’re prone to emotional eating.  Help out by serving others. Instead of hanging out by the dessert table looking for some company, be proactive and help the hostess. Clear the table or offer to do some dishes. Getting into action will take your mind off of food and fill you up with a feeling of usefulness.  Free food isn’t free.I don’t know why this is, but whenever food is free, people think they had better get their fill. It’s been a long time since the last famine, so it really doesn’t make sense. Tell yourself you can have whatever you want, anytime, even if you have to pay for it later. Then just decline the freebies. Buffet. Food buffets, especially at restaurants, are usually big traps for emotional eaters. Even if we intend to eat a normal amount, by the time we’re in the middle of the buffet and have a full plate, we feel obligated to continue putting food on until we’re at the end.
